Mary Berman

May 1st 2023 would have been Mary's 70th birthday. The other day I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about some of the things Mary and I did over the many years we were together. We were perfectly matched. We were spontaneous and life was fun. Two theater stories.

I woke up thinking about the time we went to New York to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. The day before we went to see Batman on the big screen and then bought Batman t-shirts after we left the theater. We wore them to see Phantom of the Opera the next day. If there had been cell phone cameras we probably would have been pictured in the New York Post. We went to our respective rest rooms during intermission and had well dressed people laughing hysterically as they kept coming up to each of us telling us they saw our partner.

That made me think of another spontaneous thing we did. We saw Mandy Patinkin on Broadway. We actually saw him three times in his one man show. Mandy would ask if anyone in the audience would like to come up on stage with him. That day we had third row isle seats. Before the final words were out of his mouth Mary was on the stage dancing next to Mandy for her Broadway debut, her dream come true. I had a small point and shoot camera in Mary's hand bag and dove for the camera as she dove for the stage and was able to get a few pictures. After the show we were invited back stage to meet Mandy and he posed for a few pictures with Mary. We noticed that it was the last time he ever offered for someone to come up on stage with him.
